WHERE DO MY FAIR SHARE FEES/DUES GO?
by Marilyn Rossa
Periodically, the Federation has sent out an information sheet to members to let them know how their dues are distributed. Now, since we have fee-payers as well as members, we thought this would be a good time to send out this information again.
In case there's any confusion, your fees/dues go only to the categories listed below. CCFT does not donate any of your money to political candidates, political issues, or charities (except student scholarship funds). And speaking of scholarships, CCFT has just begun the CCFT Lenore Erickson Scholarship through Cuesta's Foundation (As a side note, the Federation initiated a student scholarship at the request of a faculty member seeking religious objection to supporting a labor organization). We are very excited about this new scholarship and encourage faculty to make a donation to it in honor of an esteemed faculty member. The Executive Board has approved a motion to make the first donation, $500, to kick off the fund.
If you have had any questions about where your money goes, we hope the information provided answers those questions. If not, give me a call.

Imagine - 6,000 people!
What is this event all about?
A commemorative event honoring those who lost their lives on Sept 11 You and your family hear of a tribute to the 6000+ people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. You decide you want to attend this event, which is to take place on November 25. What will your experience be like on that Sunday after Thanksgiving, after a family holiday filled with love and gratitude?
By car, you will arrive at one of the three performances of this tribute - either in Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, or Arroyo Grande, California. There you will find a long line of people, dressed as they were the morning they innocently said goodbye to their children, grabbed their New York Times, or cup of Starbucks and went to work. You will see them standing along the sidewalk - spreading out over a four-mile stretch of roadway -- executives, secretaries, maintenance workers, firefighters, flight attendants... DEAR FACULTY
This note serves as an introduction and a call for involvement in the process of resolution of important faculty issues. Read on...:) I thought this might be a good time to introduce myself as your CCFT Grievance Officer. I am truly excited to have this opportunity to represent you. Still, recognizing the position that I am in, my true hope is that you will not need me!!! :) In my role as Grievance Officer I will be interpreting contract and making sure that process has been followed whenever there is a concern presented by a faculty member. My intent will be to gather facts, interpret the information appropriately, and make recommendations for resolution. My desire is to effectively manage conflicts in hopes of avoiding any adversarial battles, stress and/or anxiety for both the faculty member and the district. I seek to promote individual responsibility for not only recognition of the conflict but for active pursuit of solutions to that conflict. I don't want to look at conflict as a problem but to see it and manage it as an opportunity for positive change, growth, improved understanding, and communication. This approach, I believe can help us to promote resolution in a quick and satisfying way for all concerned.
However, if it is determined that process has been compromised or the contract has been violated, then it might be appropriate for a grievance to be filed. This is some-thing I can do on your behalf. First and foremost, I am here for you. If you feel that the contract is not being followed in relation to your position, or you have a problem or concern you need to share and you just want to talk to somebody, or you have a question about a faculty issue as it relates to the contract, please do not hesitate to contact me. I want to know your concerns and find a way to help resolve the issue fairly in the hope that we need not take it to a grievance level. I ask only one thing of you. Get to know your union contract. It outlines your responsibilities and benefits of being a faculty member at Cuesta College. On another note: if you are interested in serving on the Grievance Committee, please let me know. This is an opportunity for us to come together as colleagues to discuss important faculty issues, encourage creative remedies, and make recommendations for change. I am pleased to be able to work with you at this level.
Regards,
